From The Hindu, April 15, 1925: The Ceylon Pearl Fishery

“The Times of Ceylon” has the following under date April 6: The Government share of oysters on April 6th was 523,000 and fetched from Rs. 34 to Rs. 36 per 1,000. The Government share of oysters on April 7th was 440,000 and fetched from Rs. 34 to 36 per 1,000; the Cheval Paar was fished on both days. Several divers are leaving.

Last night, 1,400 divers and 86 boats left for Cheval Paar and will return this evening. It has not been decided when the fishery is to be closed. A south-west wind is blowing. The population is daily thinning. The steam-boat service has been disorganised owing to heavy wind. Several cloth merchants are leaving camp. The pearl market is very dull.
