From the snow-clad lanes of Srinagar to the top ranks of a fiercely competitive national exam, Toiyeb Ashiq’s story is one of quiet determination and record-breaking brilliance. When he spoke over the phone, his voice was calm and composed; the kind of clarity that comes from a deep sense of purpose. “I am happy, but this is just a step,” he said, almost brushing off what many in the Valley call a historic moment.

When the JEE Main 2025 results were announced, Toiyeb emerged as a high scorer and the highest-ranking student from Kashmir, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 152. His name now figures on the official JEE website as the State Topper from Jammu & Kashmir.

What makes his feat even more remarkable is a perfect 100 in Mathematics. “I started developing an interest in Mathematics during COVID…..and since then I have been very interested in the subject. That early interest helped me build a strong base, which probably contributed to my full score in JEE.”

A crucial turning point

Toiyeb started his academic journey with RISE coaching classes in Srinagar when he was still in Class 10. He first rose to prominence in 2023 after topping the CBSE Class 10 Board Exams. Since then, as a natural talent, he has remained steadfast in his pursuit.

“My journey has been shaped a lot by RISE. There’s study material everywhere nowadays, but what truly makes a difference is the right mentorship and guidance. RISE provided me that. The teachers here have not only taught concepts clearly but have also kept us disciplined and focused, especially during tough phases.”

Founded in 2015 by three IITians — Mubeen Masudi, Imbesat Ahmad, and Salman Shahid, RISE has shaped the futures of hundreds of students by offering top-tier mentorship.

Toiyeb’s success is built on years of hard work and discipline. He said that the exam and the journey was not easy, “There were distractions, moments of self-doubt, and pressure….but every time that happened, I reminded myself why I started.”

Toiyeb’s achievement is more than just a personal milestone. In a region where educational infrastructure is still evolving, and where many students, especially girls, are steered towards more conventional career paths, his JEE rank is a symbol of what’s possible.

Looking ahead

Despite all the attention after his results, Toiyeb remains laser-focused on the upcoming JEE Advanced exam in May 2025. His goal is to study Computer Science Engineering at IIT, preferably in one of the top ones. “I am very interested in the field….I am fascinated by how it is changing the world,” he said.

When asked about his advice to younger aspirants, he said, “It is important to stay consistent, find what you are interested in and give it your best will all commitment.”

A trailblazer for the valley

As the Valley celebrates this rare academic triumph, Toiyeb Ashiq stands poised at the threshold of a new chapter — one that leads not only to an IIT, but perhaps to a future where many more young Kashmiris dare to dream beyond the mountains that surround them. “Kashmir has talent,” he said softly before signing off. “Sometimes, all it takes is for someone to believe in it.”
