From The Hindu, April 17, 1925: Western tourists in Ceylon.

We learn from “The Ceylon Daily News” that the Anchor Liner “California”, of 17,000 tons, which is on tour round the world with about 600 tourists arrived in Colombo on Saturday last on her way for Calcutta. The majority of the tourists are middle or working class people whose occupations range from an ex-Governor of a State to a telephone operator. The total of 600 tourists is composed of 582 Americans, 11 Britishers, 4 Germans and others. They belong to the following professions :—

Physicians and Dentists 28; Teachers 23; Students 21; Bankers 12; Manufacturers 24; Estate Agents 16; Lawyers 10; Tourists’ Agents 9; Salesmen and Nurses 16; Clergymen 6; Journalists 5.

The oldest member of the party is a well-known authoress Miss Flavia Canfield 81 years of age. The youngest tourist (who is doing the tour alone is Julian Hochfelder, aged 10. In Colombo the tourists have been out sight-seeing and they were also taken by special train to Kandy.
