London, March 12: The Army estimates for 1925-26 amount to £44,500,000 compared with £44,000,000 for 1924-25. Establishment for the regular Army takes up £160,666 compared with £161,000 last year, including maintenance cost of 4,000 Indian troops employed by the Air Ministry in Iraq.
The reduction is due to administrative economics and not to reduction of fighting units. There is a shortage of two to three thousand in the strength of the British Army, excluding British troops in India, which are approximately up to the establishment. Recruiting during the past 12 months has been disappointing, only 30,000 recruits being obtained out of 34,000 required for the Army Reserve and 94,000 obtained out of 1,40,000 required for Territorial Army.
